Murphy Beds of San Diego wall beds can use any standard mattress that fit the following guidelines: mattress must be no more than *12″ thick and have an inner frame for support. Please measure to the thickest point and not just between the stitched welts on the sides. We do not recommend any all foam type mattress in a Wall bed. This type of mattress lacks a frame and does not like to be stored in the vertical position for long periods of time which may cause it to slump a bit. Also memory foam and older latex foam mattresses tend to be heavier, do not hold their shape when in the upright position. Futon mattress will not work. If using your own mattress, it must be onsite at time of installation for proper adjustment of mechanism.
We manufacture our Murphy beds to accommodate industry standard size mattresses; California King, Eastern King, Queen, Full, and Twin. The Murphy bed cabinet is designed to accommodate any standard innerspring mattress, as long as it does not exceed 12 inches in total thickness including a 2” foundation. With a mattress of proper thickness, bed linens can remain in place when the Murphy bed is closed. Our 2” Foundations are available in all sizes and make your wall bed easier to put sheets on.
The counter balance mechanism in our Murphy bed designs has been engineered to offset the weight of most mattress. Some mattresses, like viscoelastic memory foam and latex, are very heavy and will affect how heavy the bed feels when opening and closing it. The counter balance mechanism is not affected by this added weight, it will simply make the bed feel slightly heavier to operate. We strongly recommend checking with us if you want to use a mattress that you are not sure about. Thicker mattresses may be accommodated by altering the cabinet depth. Just ask.
